My friend Anita stopped by last week to meet Ben & brought us one of the best comfort foods to keep in the freezer. She calls it "Gook" & it was perfect for tonight's dinner on this snowy February day.
Gook
1½ lbs Ground Beef
1 tsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Garlic Powder
1 tsp. Salt
2 - 8oz. Cans Tomato Sauce
8oz. Cream Cheese, softened
1 cup Low-Fat Sour Cream, heaping
1 cup Fat-Free Cottage Cheese, heaping
8 Green Onions, chopped
¾ Package of Extra Wide Egg Noodles
Shredded Cheddar Cheese (Use chunk of cheese & shred it. Melts better this way.) ...I buy the 8 oz. Kraft Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese block
-Brown Ground Beef. Drain fat. Add Sugar, Garlic Powder, Salt, & Tomato Sauce. Simmer.
-In a mixing bowl, combine Cream Cheese, Sour Cream, Cottage Cheese, & Green Onions.
-Prepare noodles according to package directions. Drain & rinse with cold water.
-Layer as follows: ½ of the Noodles, ½ of the Cheese Mixture, ½ of the Meat Sauce. Repeat with remaining noodles, cheese mixture, & meat sauce. Top with Shredded Cheddar Cheese.
-Bake @ 350 for about 45 minutes.
-Can be made ahead & refrigerated. Adjust baking time if casserole is cold.
*Suggestion: Serve with Garlic Bread or a loaf of crusty bread
*Makes for delicious leftovers, too!
